Week in Review
(4/4 - 4/22)
Busy, busy, busy bees in room 176 for these past few weeks!  Students have been filling buckets, completing homework, and practicing our class songs for the upcoming play.  Before you know it, summer break will be here! Yikes!  Below are a few pictures of what our learners do first thing in the mornings - SEATWORK:

In our Writing Workshop, students had a great time writing creative and mysterious stories.  Some of them had their voices recorded and posted to a podcast found on this blog under Learner's Stories. Check it out!  Currently we have traveled into a new study that will remain with us until the end of the school year...poetry!  Learners are taking ordinary objects and describing them through a "poets eyes".  Amazing and imaginative writing coming out of their minds.  Stay tuned to some posting/readings of student work on the page, Learner's Stories.

In Science, we had a chance to take an exciting trip to the zoo to understand our study on Ecosystems. Thank you to all my parent chaperons!!!

Now we are beginning a new study on Botany --- more specifically plants!

During the math work cycle, students are working on varying concepts.  Some of those concepts are fractions (equivalent and adding fractions with common numerators), basic understanding of grouping and sharing (multiplication and division), measuring capacity, and extended forms of division and multiplication.  Check out students from the Pyramid group doing the Multiplication Mambo.

(3/7 - 3/25)
BUSY MONTH this month has been!!! Our learners have been busy working in and outside of the classroom!  We have also had some special celebrations.  On Thursday, March 17th, students proudly wore their green (as well as on their face) and looked in our hallway for little men that left their footprints...hmmm?!

On March 18th, students (thank you to all again) surprised me with TONS of BEAUTIFUL roses for my birthday!  The rest of the day was packed with fun.  After the students specials, I was again surprised with a beautiful class card, chocolate cake, and a birthday song!  Thank you ALL for making this a special day for me..."best day EVER!"

Prior to Spring Break, we have been working on building our classroom community.  I introduced the students to the concept of being a "bucket filler."  We are building back up our trust for one another as well as empathy.  Our first activity was writing a complement to our classmates.  It really filled our hearts with joy to hear nice words from others.  After the break, we will continue the activity with REAL buckets!  We also provided buckets to our administration to let them know that they are doing a GREAT job with the school.  In addition we read them the story that relates to the bucket filling.

On March 14th, PI DAY, we worked with circles and fractions.  What better way to celebrate than with PIE!!  Students did an amazing job with their fraction use in order to have a slice of pie.  Thank parents that were able to donate!  Our tummies were filled!
Continuing with our study of the Ecosystem, students had the opportunity to understand and demonstrate their learning of food chains through a partner activity.  The learners also watch a silly video and listened to a read aloud about the concept.

In our writer's workshop, we a re wrapping up the unit on non-fiction writing.  The learners wrote an "All-About" book on a president.  Prior to starting a new unit, the students did some creative writing.  Boy are these writer's engaged!  I introduced a story, "The mysteries of Harris Burdick" by Chris Van Allsburg, and noted that their were several odd pictures in the book.  Each picture contained a title and a starter to the story.  It is up to the kids to tell the story!  There are SO many great stories being told that I have been sending students to Mrs. Spare to read aloud their stories.  I am very proud to see our learner's becoming eager writers!

Week in Review
(2/28 to 3/4)
What a great full week of learning!  In Math, our group's focus has been understanding and recognizing arrays within our environment.  Learner's have been working together to create arrays using materials found in the classroom.  Additionally, students had to demonstrate the use of an array by completing either the addition or multiplication operation.  Look at the pictures below...can you figure out the operations?

Within the small math groups, the Sphere group has started to understand, with more depth, the functions of fractions.  We have had such a good time using the Montessori materials.  However, I think it is time to play with food when it comes to understanding math in an everyday situation...Stay Tuned!

Do you know what biotic and abiotic mean?  Our learners do!  For the next few weeks, students will be introduced to the unit of Our Ecosystem.  Studying biology and ecology will help equip our learners for our exciting field trip to the zoo on April 14th.  This week, students went outside and observed living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) factors found within our environment.
Friday was a day of guest speakers---After our discussion on endangered species, we traveled up to Mr. Tate's room to have a mini lesson on fossils.  I was really impressed with the students manners and courtesy!

After specials, students had a special visitor---Elsi from Finland.  Elsi is an exchange student that is living with her host family, The Sheridan's (Madeline's family - our 1st grade learner).  Elsi is currently attending Eagle Ridge Academy as a Senior.  She gave a great presentation about her country, her language, her family, and answered many questions with ease.  Thank you Elsi for your visit and bringing your country into our classroom!

(2/22 to 2/25)

This week in culture, learners are wrapping up the unit of "Around the World in 14 Days" by completing a group poster of their continent.  Next week, students will be presenting these posters to their class.

Reading, reading, and more reading!  Our learners have been busy readers this week.  Bromley has a contest for the annual Read Across America in which students must read and do as many book reports as possible.  The class with the most books read recieves a special cookie treat from Ms. A and will have special reading guests in their classroom.  For each student that completes four book reports they will get a free book from the library as well.  Mrs. Tate's learners have been doing a tremendous job on completing this task.

Week in Review

(2/14 to 2/17)

Learning is a never ending concept in room 176 for our learners!  This week in Math, a variety of activities were taking place.  Some students are working on division with remainders, others took a test to show that they have mastered graphs and making tally charts, a few were working on weight, and another group demonstrated their understanding of money by exchanging classmates coins.  Check out the pictures below!

For our Around the World in 14 Days unit, we had a guest speaker visit our classroom to speak about Brazil in South America.  Ms. Kristie talked about the language of Portuguese, the education kids receive, and how kids like our learners dress.  Food was also discussed and she brought in examples.

Week in Review
(2/7 to 2/11)

Brrr!!  It sure has been cold outside this week; however, that hasn't stopped our learners from discovering new things in the classroom!  In Math, a group of students are engaging in a new method of understanding numeration and operations with a method called, TouchMath.  This is a wonderful tactile method in helping kids solve different operations with touch points on a number.  Below are a few pictures of students engaged in this method.

In our Writer's Workshop, we had a chance to celebrate our work on Small Moments.  Student's studied how author Angela Johnson included "dot, dot, dot" and "repeaters" in her stories.  Our learner's had the opportunity to follow Ms. Johnson's lead by adding this craft into their own Small Moment papers.  In celebration, students read aloud (on a volunteer basis') their 'captured' moments to their classmates.  Student's work will be showcased on the class bulletin board just outside our classroom.  Please stop by to check out these little author's 'crafty' work!

The journey continues in culture as the learners travel around the world.  This week students had a chance to visit South America and Australia.  Australia was quite a favorite among the learners.  After studying the lingo, art, animals, and land students had the opportunity to experience a tastey snack from the 'Land Down Under'...Fairy Bread.  Students LOVED it!  Receipe: white bread with a spread of margarine and round, colorful sprinkles.  Did you know that cotton candy is called Fairy Floss in Australia and candy is called lollie? So the game Candyland is actually Lollieland!  In addition to food, students also create aboriginal paintings of a kangaroo.

Student's ended the week with a Valentine's Day party. What a GODD time! Thank you to all the parents that donated food/drinks as well as volunteering your time in the classroom.  Your are truly appreciated!

Week in Review
(1/31 - 2/4)

Super Stars for the month of February are Erik and Keilin!  Awesome job boys at following the BECS Way :)

This week, our learners traveled to Asia and made MANY fun discoveries!  We watched a video that showed great pictures of the land, structures, and people.  The learners also enjoyed a little snack from China (fortune cookie) while making a Chinese red lantern. Thank you to a few parents for allowing the learners to look at your artifacts from Asia.

Learners have been involved in another fun way of learning...writing on the table!  In our math groups, students have a chance to demonstrate their understanding by writing on the blue table with special markers.  They are so engaged and involved with this method!

--------------------------------------------------
Week in Review
(1/4 to 1/14)
This week we started a new unit in Culture called, "Around the World in 14 Days".  Students will be visiting all seven continents in 14 days.  They will be experiencing the food, culture, music, art and learn about fun/interesting facts about the continent.  This past week we paid a visit to Africa and Europe.  Students created African masks and enjoyed a scone from Europe while listening to stories from varying countries.

In our Writer's Workshop the learners are continuing to understand our mentor author's craft.  This week, students looked for two common crafts in Angela Johnson's books, Wind Flyer and When I Grow Old with You.  Learner's noticed that she often repeats her title in the story, which we call a 'catchy phrase' or a 'repeater'.  Another discovery they made was the funny punctuation she puts into the middle of her sentences.  Learner's are calling this 'dot, dot, dots' (otherwise known as ellipses). We are using Ms. Johnson's craft and applying it to our writing.

Week in Review
(1/4 to 1/14)

With a new year comes new concepts and ways of learning for the student's.  For the past week-in-a-half the learner's have jumped quickly into their learning.

In math, the class has been working on the measurement of perimeter and area.  Learner's have been demonstrating their understanding by measuring items around the classroom and finding its area.  Below are a few pictures of student's tracing shapes onto a grid paper and finding its area using square units.

In Science, students are finishing their study of the Earth's Structure with the water cycle.  Learner's were using vocabulary words to describe this cycle - such as: precipitation, condense, evaporation, run off, and groundwater.  They had a chance to put these terms into action with a lab experiment.  Below are a few pictures of this activity.

Lastly, in our Writer's Workshop I am using Lucy Caulkin's curriculum.  For the next unit, the learner's are eager to study author's and their craft of writing small moments.  The author that we have chosen to study is Angela Johnson.  Using Mrs. Johnson as our mentor, we understand that we must capture any small moment that occurs in our daily lives.  Therefore, we have our red Small Topic notebooks that travel with us in the classroom.  Anytime an idea comes to us we will immediately write it in our notebooks - just like Angela Johnson does.  She has written children's picture books that capture small moments in a child's life.  She is an amazing author because she writes like a child and demonstrates a beautiful craft in writing.  Below is a class picture of the learner's with their Small Topic notebooks.

 Week in Review
(12/6 to 12/10)

This week, our learners worked VERY hard on their rock projects.  Each student had the choice to either work alone and choose their own rock/mineral to study or to work with another friend and select a rock/mineral from Mrs. Tate's "thinking cap".  Students had a chance to show off their research among their fellow classmates through a presentation.  They all did an amazing job!  Check out a few of the pictures below:

 Week in Review
(11/22 to 12/3)
The last week in a half has been filled with fun adventures! On November 22nd and 23rd kids enjoyed learning about the purpose of our Thanksgiving holiday.  We also had the opportunity to share our thanks with Bromley's families at Mrs. Tate's and Mrs. Rollman's feast.  Thank you to all for your support and participation in this wonderful experience.

In science, students have strapped on their geologist hats and vests. We have been studying various types of Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic rocks.  Students have been identifying rocks property traits - color, texture, shape, hardness, and luster.  To celebrate our studies, the learners had a chance to create their own pet rock after giving a detailed description of its traits. Currently, students are working on a project that gives them a chance to do research on a particular rock of their choosing.  They will be presenting them sometime next week to the entire class.

The museum came to our school last Thursday to present, "Astronomy", to the Montessori classrooms 1st through 5th.  The students really enjoyed the experience of being in the doom to see the night sky and listening to a few Greek myth stories that relate to the constellations.

In our Writer's Workshop, the learners successfully made it to the "celebrating" stage of Narrative Writing.  I am in the process of putting together the students slide show of the "Where in the World are Mrs. Tate's Learners?"  We will be having a Celebration Party on Friday to show off our written work among peers.

Our learners are entering into the world of letter writing.  Mrs. Rollman's and our class are teaming up to exchange letters in a pen-pal situation.  For the past few days we have been exposing kids to children's literature involving and displaying correct letter writing formats.  Students will understand the five parts of a friendly letter as well as the business letter.  The art of writing letters and sending them through the mail seems to be a lost art.  We do not want our children to forget this mode of communication.

 Week in Review
(11-1 to 11-19)
For the past few weeks, Mrs. Tate's learners have been busy filling their brains with science, culture, mathematics, reading, and writing.  I enjoy watching the eagerness they display with new ideas and how they show growth in their own understanding.

In math, we have six different math groups going during the work cycle. They have been very busy with either working on addition and subtraction with or without exchange, or converting yards into feet, or working with higher level multiplication and division problems.  Some of the learners are starting to learn multiplication for the first time.  Boy, are they excited!  Our group focus has been on money and time.  After winter break, we will focus on money a bit more.  Below are a few pictures of hard workers from the Cylinder group:

In science, our focus questions for our unit on Earth Science is: How were the mountains formed?  What makes up our Earth's structure?  We dove into the center of our world and discovered the layers (inner core, outer core, mantle, and the crust). Students learned that the mantle plays a big part in earthquakes and volcanoes.  We studied plate tectonics and the different plate boundaries.  Ask your child to show you with their hands what a 'convergent', a 'divergent' and a 'transform' boundary are.  In order to understand the different land formations on our Earth's crust, students worked cooperativley in groups by looking at maps or globes to discover those land forms.

For writing, we have started an exciting genre of narrative writing.  Students have gone through some mini lessons about writing SHOWING sentences and not TELLING sentences.  These lessons have prepared them for the project of "Where in the World are Mrs. Tate's Learners?"  They have seen many different exemplar work examples from Where in the World is Mrs. Waffenschmidt? as well as Mrs. Tate's example.  My hope is to develop a power point of their work with some pictures of their trip in celebration of their 'published' pieces.  Taking the journey of the writing process is such a great experience for our learners.  Look at the few pictures below that show the steps they need to take to complete their writings.  This has really helped students!

To all, have a restful and pleasent weekend!
  ----------------------------------------Week in Review
(10-25 to 10-28)

What a busy week but loaded with great conversations for the adults and learning fun for the students! Thank you all for attending conferences and please contact me any time for further discussion about your child's "learning journey."  Our short week ended with a fun filled day.  Our students won a pizza party (thank you PTO!) as the class with the most candy for the Harvest Hop - 98 pounds!!!  We enjoyed our pizza on Thursday along with a movie - The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

Towards the end of the school day our wonderful parents provided MANY treats and goodies for our learners.  Students also made creative masks and caramel apples.  Thank you to ALL that supported the fun --- as kids were leaving I heard many positive remarks.  THANK YOU parents, I truly appreciate all that you do!  What a great end to the week --- check out the pictures of our Halloween Party:

Have a safe and "tricky" weekend filled with sugary treats!

Week in Review
(10/11/10 to 10/14/10)
Within the past few weeks, our learners have taken a journey through the writing process with descriptive writing.  The writing process consists of the following stages: Pre-Writing, Writing (1st Draft), Revising, Editing, and Publishing (Final Draft).  This week, students worked on their published piece of their descriptive writing.  A few wrote out their papers in their best penmanship while others opted to type up their final draft using either the class computers or AlphaSmarts.

As we continue on with our writing, we find ourselves studying the importance of organized paragraphs. These paragraphs need to have a beginning, middle, and an end with detailed information.  These learners will be writing a How To paper next week that includes this information.  They were introduced to this type of writing this week with a lesson on making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  Students were expected to write out clear and precise directions for Mrs. Tate. A few learners had to read aloud these directions and Mrs. Tate followed them exactly...needless to say it was a messy lesson!

This week in Math, students worked in a variety of areas - measurement (length using centimeters, yards, and kilometers); addition and subtraction stories; and place value of numbers up to 10,000.  Our group focus for this week has been on solid shapes.  Ask your child what group they are apart of and whether their shape has a vertex, edge, and/or face.  Students were expected to create these solid shapes as well as writing about shapes they see within their environment.  Checkout our bulletin board outside of the classroom to see a few of these projects posted.

Along with these geometric shapes, a few of the students Solar System Reference Guide Books are also on the board. In Science, we have finished up our study on Space.  Students showed a great amount of interest in this area and I encourage them to continue their search within this field.  We are now turning our focus onto the planet we call home - Earth.

Week in Review
(10/4/10 to 10/8/10)
Another great week for our learners!  In Science, along with studying the 8 planets of our Solar System, the learners had a chance to study the three states of matter: liquid, solid and gas.  We have also studied the physical and chemical changes of matter. Mrs. Tate's class had a chance to take a mini field trip to Mr. Tate's room on Tuesday to witness physical and chemical changes through laboratory experiments. You might have heard your child talk excitedly about a puking pumpkin.  Well that is the case - a chemical change that is!  Check out the pictures of the learner's enjoying science:
Mr. Tate's 7th grade Science class has welcomed us into their class - Thank you!
A great flow chart to understand physical and chemical changes in matter.
Mr. Tate showing our students the light produced from two chemicals mixing (glow sticks)

Alka Seltzer in water - Chemical or Physical change???

The pumpkin feeling pretty good...

...until Mr. Tate feeds it something and makes it sick!

They LOVED this! Two great reactions - 1. a puking pumpkin and 2. our learner's faces!

Week in Review
(9/20/10 to 9/23/10)

Within our four days of school we have managed to work hard on writing Skills in our Writer's Workshop.  1st grade are working on combining sentences together to create a paragraph.  2nd and 3rd grade are creating descriptive writings using their senses.
In science, we are continuing our exploration of space.  We have had great discussions regarding the closest star to the Earth...the Sun!  Additionally, we have looked at the night sky and the constellations.  Next week, we plan to visit each planet to develop a better understanding of its properties.
Below are a few great pictures of the learners growing in their knowledge during the Work Cycle:

----------------------------------------Week in Review
(9/13/10 to 9/17/10)

Technology has been used MANY times in our classroom.  As we continue to learn new skills we reinforce this newly learned skills through fun short videos on a website called BrainPop (http://www.brainpopjr.com and http://www.brainpop.com).  This week we watched the "Big Bang", "Life Cycle of Stars", "Types of Sentences", "Writing with the Senses", "Writing a Paragraph", and "Counting Coins".  Below is a picture of the students engaged in watching the video "Writing a Paragraph".

PAPERCLIP RACE

Learners in Mrs. Tate's room have been working hard to earn paperclips.  Students have to work as a community by being respectful to themselves, to others, and to the environment.  When they demonstrate these qualities as a class they begin to earn paperclips.  However, students can lose these paperclips when these positive behaviors are not present.  Their goal is to have the paperclips from the top of the whiteboard reach the ground. Once the class has accomplished this goal, a surprise is in store for them!! As of Friday, the class is about three paperclips away from reaching the floor!!!

Week in Review
(9/7 - 9/10)...
During this four day week, learners have been very engaged in their studies. Reading, writing, and arithmetic are the main focus during their work cycle.  I had the opportunity to meet one-on-one with students to discuss what work they need to focus on in order to challenge themselves.   Below are a few pictures of learners working hard:

This week, in science we have explored the Universe and the many galaxies within the Universe.  The learners seem very excited with our exploration of space.  As we traveled from the outer limits of the universe and zoomed into other galaxies, we will next discover the stars and the constellations.  Please feel free to stare up into the night sky with your child and point out what you see!  Below are a few pictures of our messy Galaxy crafts done on Friday.  I have already displayed the projects in the room and they look GREAT!  Our room has become the universe!  Have a pleasant weekend.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A week of hard workers
(8-30 to 9-2)...
It is so exciting to watch our learners working hard through their work cycle.  A three hour work cycle consists of math, culture (geography/history), language (reading/writing) and science.  In Montessori, students know that they need to choose work that will challenge them educationally as well as increase their self-confidence: "You CAN do it!!"  A few of our students have chosen to expand their knowledge by doing research in areas of interest (i.e., bald eagles). I have thoroughly enjoyed watching students working cooperatively as well.  The pictures below demonstrate their eagerness to learn new concepts with a variety of hands-on materials.
Enjoy and have a wonderful three day weekend!
So proud of the work she has done!

It is all about working as a team in room 176!
Very motivated to learn and master her facts - way to go!!

Butterfly Release

What an EXCITING morning for our class today!  Our class caterpillar friend has turned into an Adult Butterfly. In order for our friend to continue its life cycle, we as a class said our goodbye's with a release.  The kids were tickled with this discovery. During our writing time, we watched a video about butterflies on BrainPopJr.com, completed a life cycle diagram, and wrote a story from the perspective of a butterfly.  Students creative minds were hard at work.  Great stories were written along with a few beautiful drawings!

Hard to see, but a Black Swallow Tail Butterfly emerged from its pupa stage this morning!

-----------------------------------------------------------

August 16th - 20th
Your child has been working on respecting themselves, others, and the environment!  Additionally, children having been transitioning into their Montessori work cycle.  I have been able to really assess their math skills this week!  In writing, we have discussed what the writing process is and how it will be used in our classroom.  In the 2nd grade reading group, we have been actively getting "into the books"!!  Children are discovering the improtant tools needed to become a good reader - Prior Knowledge, Making Connections, Visualizing, Questioning, and Summarizing.  In Science, our learners have traveled a long distance from beyond the Milky Way all the way into the cell of a leaf in the slide show, Powers of Ten. (http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/primer/java/scienceopticsu/powersof10/)
These learners have been introduced to not only one...not two...but THREE Swallowtail caterpillars.  We are very eager to witness the life cycle of a butterfly...STAY TUNED!

Check back at the end of next week with more information pertaining to your child's growth in their education!
